| The Tilden Park BBQ was the first major social activity after the first candidate meeting. It provides a good chance for a large number of candidates, officers, and members to socialize. | ||
Project Description
The Tilden Park BBQ took place at the Spillway area in Tilden Park. Everyone met at the Hearst Mining Circle on campus and then drove to Tilden. It lasted for 3 hours and allowed for great interaction between members and candidates. The event included a bbq lunch, sports activities, and dessert. The event cost was fully covered by the chapter. This event is a traditional event for the chapter and is held on the weekend following the first candidate meeting.
Event Preparation
Publicity sent out invitations to members and candidates via email and sign-ups were held at Part 1 of the candidate packet turn-in (make sure to ask candidates and officers whether or not they can drive). Vps Amar Patel and Peter Masatani figured out what to buy for the event. President Brian Love purchased water, soda, cookies, chips, carrot sticks, hamburger meat, buns, lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments from costco. The charcoal, bbq tools, untensils, a football, and a frisbee were already in possession by the chapter. Brian also brought veggie patties and some condiments from home. Peter found a location online and printed out directions for drivers. Amar made copies for drivers right before the event and passed them out. After meeting up at HMC circle at 10:00 am, everyone drove to Tilden and met up at the specified area.
Problems Encountered
We were unsure whether or not there would be a suitable bbq pit available. However, this was not a problem because all the pits were open. Also, there was a Cal football game (homecoming) on this day and many people wanted to leave early. We considered moving the bbq to Sunday, but we decided that if the event were held earlier in the day there would be no problems.
Improvements Suggested
If held later in the day, it may be a good idea to reserve a bbq pit. However, this costs money so I suggest that the event be held early in the day (arrive at Tilden around 10:30 am so meet at HMC at 10:00 am). It may also be a good idea to have planned events or games such as a football game. However, this may prove difficult because many people do not want to play games.
Enjoyment
The event was enjoyed by all. The weather was very nice and there was plenty of food for everyone.
