Telebears Advising is a great way for TBP to outreach to students interested in engineering.

Project Description

This was the third Telebears Advising session of the semester. Candidates were required to attend one of three dates. During the session, candidates and officers offered advice to other students both in and out of the College of Engineering.

Event Preparation

The primary planners of the event were Diana Nguyen, Issac Seetho, Shawn Cheng, Mike Schou, and Jessica McDonald. Diana Nguyen reserved the Wozniak Lounge from 7pm to 9pm in September 2003. Room reservations for Soda Hall rooms were made at http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Resguide/CS/sodasched.shtml. The dates for the three Telebears Advising sessions were set to be within the first two weeks of Telebears Phase I. Additionally, each of the three dates were to be on different days of the week as to accommodate as many people as possible. Publicity for the Telebears Advising session came in several forms. The staff members in charge of publicity from each engineering department were emailed with a flyer to forward to all of their students. (Since chemical engineering does not have a staff member in charge of publicity, TBP requested the AICHE forward the email to their members.) Announcements were made by candidates and officers in various classes to publicize the event including: physics H7A, H7B, H7C, 7A, 7B; engineering 28, 36, 45, 77, 92; math 1b, 53, 54, 55; electrical engineering 20, 40, 42; computer science 3, 61A, 61B, 61C; and bioengineering 24. A flyer was created by Diana Nguyen, photocopied by Mike Schou, and posted by Diana Nguyen, Issac Seetho, Shawn Cheng, and Mike Schou. Shortly before the event, tables and chairs were rearranged in Wozniak Lounge to form circles for each engineering major. Signs with the name of the major(s) were posted on each table. Shawn Cheng went outside to direct people to the Wozniak Lounge. Snacks at the event (pizza and soda) was provided for by Jessica McDonald of the EJC. Pizza was ordered from and delivered by West Coast Pizza. Order included: 3 veggie pizza, 3 cheese pizza, 3 pepperoni pizzas, and 1 cheesy stix.

Problems Encountered

Since the event was held in the evening, Soda Hall was locked to the general public. All those attending the event had to enter via the 4th floor balcony. Furthermore, the janitor did not allow us to post signs with directions on the glass doors. To solve this problem, we sent out an officer, Shawn Cheng, to direct people outside Soda Hall.

Improvements Suggested

While the Wozniak Lounge is a nice room, its location is inconvenient for the group of people we are targeting to advise. Many 1st and 2nd year students have never been to the Wozniak Lounge or Soda Hall. Furthermore, the location is quite a distance from the Southside residence Halls. Furthermore, because it is locked in the evenings, accessibility into the building is a problem.

Enjoyment

The advising session was helpful for those who attended to be advised. The number of advisors far exceeded the number of students to be advised, which results in a lot of personal attention and varied opinions. Some the candidates were also able to use the time to get advice for themselves from older candidates and officers.
