Election of new officers for the next semester.

Project Description

Election of the TBP CA A chapter officer core for Spring 2004. Elections proceed with the announcement and description of the office, nomination of candidates, forum, discussion of the candidates, and election and congratulations.

Event Preparation

Fall 2003 President Brian Love reserved room 306 Soda for the election online at http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/Resguide/sodasched.shtml. Elections began at 11 am with the office of President. After Peter Masatani was elected, he conducted the elections. The following was the general procedure for electing each office: 1) announcement of the position, 2) a brief description of the position by the president and current officer(s) holding the position, 3) nominations, 4) 2 minute speech from each candidate which includes information such as relevant experience or expertise, class schedule, other commitments 5) question and answer session with the candidates and the audience, 6) candidates for contested office are sent out of the room while audience discusses them and the position, 7) election by handraising, 8) candidates let back in and 9) winner congratulated. For positions with multiple people, all were elected at the same time, however all committee chairs were elected before and separately from committee members. In cases were there were no contests, steps 4-8 were skipped. Elections lasted until 2:30 pm.

Problems Encountered

No significant problems arose. Some people arrived late.

Improvements Suggested

Election process needs to be streamlined so that elections do not drag on too long. Many people had to leave before the position they were interested was up for election. Suggestions include limiting the number of questions from the audience during the Q&A.

Enjoyment

Elections were not particularly enjoyable because of the length of time. It must be done again as it is the means of electing new officers.
