| TBP collects resumes to create a resume book that we sell to organizations that are interested in recruiting TBP members and candidates for employment and other opportunities. The sale of resume books (ideally) contributes a great deal to the funds available for TBP activities. | ||
Project Description
This project required candidates and members to submit their resume online by uploading them onto the TBP server. After the files were uploaded, Indrel officers sorted through the files to remove duplicates, to make sure that the most recent submission was inserted into the resume book, and to convert the files into a consistent format (Adobe Acrobat). Two versions of the resume book were created: a version on CD-ROM and a bound paper version.
Event Preparation
The event was announced at the first candidate meeting. Some general tips on resumes were given to the members and candidates. The VPs and Indrel officers reminded members and candidates about the event several times prior to the submission deadline. IT chair Robert Hennessy updated the directories and scripts on the server so that submissions would be saved into directories divided by major and date of graduation. Indrel chair James Li processed the files to remove duplicates, to make sure the most recent submission is kept, to convert all the files to Adobe Acrobat format, and to make sure all the files were in correct directories. He also created the resume book CD. Indrel officer Bonnie Huang printed copies of all the resumes and bound them into a book. This book was similarly divided into sections by major and graduation date.
Problems Encountered
1. Many of the resume files found on the server were actually from previous semesters. 2. Several candidates and members failed to submit their resumes on time. 3. Some of the resumes were of poor form and formatting.
Improvements Suggested
1. Update the scripts and directories on the server so that only submissions from the current semester would be processed. 2. Participation by members, although encouraged, is not mandatory. Future late submissions will not be added to the book. Failure of candidates to submit resumes on time will be dealt with by the VPs. 3. Hold a resume workshop where Indrel officers will teach participants how to create effective resumes.
Enjoyment
I doubt that anyone found this event enjoyable. However, as a major (potential) source of revenue, it is something that should be done.
