| Initiation is a tradition and necessary component of the candidate process by which candidates become members of Tau Beta Pi. It more fully teaches these new members about what Tau Beta Pi is and the responsibilities that go with being a Tau Bate. It is also a time of growth for the chapter and allows the process to being anew the next semester. | ||
Project Description
The initiation ceremony was held in Sibley Auditorium in the Bechtel Engineering Center at 5:30pm on December 5, 2003. A number of members participated directly in performing the ceremony while many more were witnesses to the 60 candidates that were initiated. The initiation was carried out as specified by the national organization with the different speakers reading their respective parts and the candidates making the transition to membership to Tau Beta Pi.
Event Preparation
The officers set the initiation time and date early in the semester. Chapter President B. Love then reserved Sibley Auditorium by seeing Portia Groce in 230 Bechtel. As the semester was winding down, Corresponding Secretary J. Hwang made sure all the necessary documents were submitted to Nationals in time to get approval for the initiation. This allowed for the certificates and Bent pins to arrive before the initiation. B. Love checked the initiation equipment and needed supplies a couple of weeks before the ceremony to ensure that everything was in order. As initiation neared, B. Love asked the officers to volunteer for the various initiation roles and handed out the scripts to the appropriate officers. Members were invited to come to the ceremony and candidates were reminded to be there on time and dressed appropriately. The day of the initiation, certificates were signed, pins and ribbons were made and last minute preparations were made. A couple of hours before the initiation the room was set up including the necessary tables, and other top secret equipment. A walk through of the ceremony was performed to ensure that those involved knew how the timing worked. The ceremony started promptly at 5:30pm and ended before 7:00pm. Afterwards, we carpooled to the banquet. For the most part, the ceremony went smoothly.
Problems Encountered
There were the almost expected problems involving slight lighting difficulties. The best way to prevent that is more rehearsing.
Improvements Suggested
Our chapter was the initiation ceremony down fairly well. There are enough officers with experience such that someone knows what’s going on. As a reminder, initiation supplies should be checked on at least 3 weeks before the ceremony. That allows for time to order new supplies. The President should also learn how to properly pronounce everyone’s full name.
Enjoyment
Everyone enjoyed the initiation ceremony. It was conducted very proffessionally and smoothly. It created a strong sense of tradition, and connection with the past. It provided a strong closure on a very successful and enjoyable candidate semester and marked the beginning of this groups new membership with Tau Beta Pi.
