Project Description

The community service officer is responsible for planning about 4-5 events per semester for candidates, members, and other officers to participate in. Typical projects are group oriented in nature and benefits different organizations around the Bay Area. Candidates are required to fulfill at least one service project as part of their pledging process.

Event Preparation

Usually each event is planned by the community service chair himself. The typical projects we've done in the past usually has a set contact person. They can be contacted through email and phone, where phone contacts was probably best to set up a meeting. When finding new projects it's necessary to first research what projects are out there via resources such as the internet. It's best to give approximately 1 month in advance to plan each event. Make sure the event is well planned out and announced to candidates to ensure enough attendence. For more details on a particular project please consult the service binder.

Problems Encountered

Last semester problems occurred when events were cancelled due to reasons that was beyond the officer's control. They were either bad dates for everyone else that was running the event, or there wasn't enough room to accomodate such a large group. It was troubling to have to scramble to find events for candidates at the end to fulfill their service requirements, so ultimately the VPs revised their requirements to accomodate the "slackers"

Improvements Suggested

To avoid this problem, again, some of it is unpreventable but adaquate planning time (of AT LEAST one month) is essential. This office is a lot of work but with a bit of time management I think the semester could run smoothly. Also, having more projects on campus would be more incentive to candidates and for those who don't have time to do them off-campus or on weekends.

Enjoyment

Yes.
