The last candidate meeting (mandatory for all candidates) allowed for the candidates to finish up their interviews and officer challenges. Also, it provided another opportunity for the candidates and officers to interact and have fun.

Project Description

VPs Amar Patel and Peter Masatani made announcements about upcoming events. They gave out details on initiation and banquet (time to meet, what to wear, where it’s at). Next we had candidate performances and then a potluck. Throughout the eating time, Amar and Peter went around and spoke to candidates for the last time that were in danger of not finishing the candidate semester.

Event Preparation

Primary event planners were Brian Love, Peter Masatani, and Amar Patel. President Brian Love reserved the Wozniak Lounge from 5pm to 8pm far in advance of the meeting in May 2003 for all candidate meetings this semester. However, the higher powers of the engineering department wanted the room from 5 to 6:30pm, thus forcing us to reschedule the meeting to 6:30pm. Kathy Wong purchased drinks from Safeway. Each group brought their food to the Woz at 6:30pm. The food was set aside while the VPs made announcements and answered questions. Next, there were candidate performances, which included dancing, juggling, singing, and chugging orange juice. Lastly, everyone ate the food the groups prepared.

Problems Encountered

Since the engineering department cancelled our reservation of the Woz, we had to reschedule it to 6:30pm (the earliest possible time). However, I think this worked out well because it gave groups more time to prepare their meals before the candidate meeting. Also, since the officers were all involved with cooking, we forgot to pick up the key for the Woz. This was really bad, but it turned out someone had a card key to the room. Thank you whoever you are!!!!! Another problem was that not all of candidates for each group were showing up to help cook for the potluck. This was a requirement of the candidate semester and we did not enforce it. Since the cost of the food for the potluck came out of the pockets of each group, it was unfair because certain candidates ate the food at the meeting but did not help cook or pay for it. If the potluck idea is continued next semester, perhaps the VPs can have the cost of the food refunded and stress the importance of this requirement.

Improvements Suggested

I felt like the potluck was chaotic because my group was rushing to make our food and transport it to the Woz in time (I am soo glad we had the meeting at 6:30 because otherwise I know we would have had problems). Also, I felt pressured because the VPs needed to go there early and setup for the meeting. I suppose everything turned out fine and the potluck was a good way to save money and have the small groups interact. I would definitely suggest continuing the potluck idea for CM#4.

Enjoyment

Everyone had fun preparing their food and everyone enjoyed the performances at the meeting. Overall, I would say that this was the most entertaining and enjoyable candidate meeting, especially since now everyone seemed to know one another.
