| This meeting allowed everyone to socialize and start getting to know each other better. It was also a chance to clarify the candidate requirements and explain the Photoscavenger Hunt and Potluck requirements in more detail. | ||
Project Description
At the second candidate meeting, we began by giving announcements about upcoming events and again explaining candidate requirements. Next we passed out catalog cards and had the candidates fill them out as we proceeded to explain the scavenger hunt and group potluck requirements. Then we split people into their groups and held a mini-scavenger hunt to kick off the event. Finally, we ate dinner and many groups worked on getting some of their photos taken.
Event Preparation
Primary event planners were Brian Love, Peter Masatani, Amar Patel and Kathy Wong. President Brian Love reserved the Wozniak Lounge from 5pm to 8pm far in advance of the meeting in May 2003 for all candidate meetings this semester. Room reservations for Soda Hall rooms can be made at the website http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Resguide/CS/sodasched.shtml. Peter divided up the candidates in 10 groups of 6 candidates and 2 officers, making sure that all engineering diciplines were represented in each group. Amar and Peter thought up ideas for the photoscavenger hunt with the help of the officer core. For the mini-scavenger hunt, we used ideas from the previous year. Amar created the instructions for and photoscavenger hunt and group potluck and made several copies for each group (2/group for each officer). Amar bought 9 cameras from costco ($11.79/3 cameras) and 1 camera from Walgreens ($6.99) for the photo hunt. Peter brought the catalog cards from 220 Bechtel. Kathy and activities bought $280.00 of food from Gypsys which is located in the Asian ghetto. After giving announcements about upcoming events and passing out catalog cards, the Vps split people into thier groups and started of the photo hunt with a mini scavenger hunt, sending the groups off to find things around campus. After succesfully completing the hunt, groups took photos and mingled while having dinner.
Problems Encountered
One of the items on the mini-scavenger hunt list was impossible to find. If the Vps use the same list of items in the future, do not use the "find an old tbp flier" one because there aren't that many of them around.
Improvements Suggested
It was difficult to explain the photoscavenger hunt and the group potluck requirements to the candidates. We only printed out instructions for the officers in each group. It may be a good idea to print out instructions for everyone (this costs more money). Also, remember to write the group number on each camera so they don't get mixed up at the meeting.
Enjoyment
Most people enjoyed the mini-scavenger hunt and definitely enjoyed being creative in taking photographs for the photoscavenger hunt. The small groups were a successful way to get people to interact. I would suggest continuing the scavenger hunt idea in the future.
