Project Description

The potluck is a semesterly event where officers and members gather to discuss the candidates, read their candidate essays and formally decide to initiate them into TBP. Officers and members are asked to bring some kind of food to make the event more social and enjoyable.

Event Preparation

VPs Peter Masatani and Amar Patel passed around sign up sheets for the event at the officer meeting on November 18th and member meeting on November 25th. President Brian Love reserved rooms 120AB Bechtel through Portia Groce in 230 Bechtel. Members were asked to bring a dish. Dishes that were brought included: brownies, chips, lasagna, tiramisu, pie, root beer floats, garlic bread, sticky rice, fried rice, chow mein, spaghetti, tortilla espaņola, banana pudding, drinks and satay chicken. The meeting, which ran from 5 to 8 pm, began with eating and reading of candidate essays. Discussion of the candidates followed and two candidates were selected as candidates of the semester. Three essays were then selected as the essays of the semester. Finally there was a long discussion about one problem candidate, followed by a vote to reject the problem candidate and a vote to formally accept 60 candidates. Several officers helped to clean up the rooms and return them to acceptable condition.

Problems Encountered

No problems were encountered, however there was a severe lack of members at the meeting. Not a single non-officer member showed up, making the meeting essentially an officer meeting with food.

Improvements Suggested

Definitely try somehow to get the members involved in the meeting. Comparing to last spring's potluck, having the potluck off-campus, in VP Peter Masatani's opinion, is more enjoyable.

Enjoyment

The potluck was very enjoyable at the beginning particularly because of the plentiful food and humorous essays. However, towards the end people became anxious, perhaps because the meeting dragged on longer than expected.
