Libraries

The UC Berkeley campus offers over twenty-five different libraries, both subject-orientated and affiliate/specialty libraries. Their services include extensive book collections, copy centers, computing centers, media resources, and online resources. It is important to become familiar with the library system.

Check-Out/Hours

In general, books can be borrowed for one month and journals anywhere from two hours to one day. A student I.D. is required to check out library materials. Non-UC Berkeley staff and students can also check out material, but a library card must be first obtained at the Doe Library circulation desk. Hours vary according to library and day of the week. Please check online for hours at: http://sunsite3.berkeley.edu:8080/hours/LH/LibraryHoursPage.

Online Catalogs

Students use the two main online library catalogs: Melvyl and GLADIS. Melvyl allows searches of all collections within the UC system. It is recommended for most material searches, such as for journals. GLADIS contains circulation information for most of UC Berkeley’s libraries and is also used for administrative purposes. This catalog is only available on telnet in the library system. Finally, Pathfinder is the online version of GLADIS.
