What is URAP?

The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) is great way to start research, available to all students and not limited to the College of Engineering. Faculty will post brief synopses of their projects that are open for undergraduates. Some faculty will list specific skills that are expected of researchers, while others may leave it open ended. In addition to that, some may require a minimum time commitment (i.e. 5-15 hours a week).

This program is unpaid, but can be used as units; every 3 hours of research is considered to be 1 unit. At the end of the semester, all apprentices are required to complete a web survey which takes about 30-45 min. This survey includes an overview of your project and what you accomplished, as well as your general opinion of the experience.

How do I apply?

The application is due during the 2nd week of instruction done through the website listed below. However, a paper copy must also be submitted to activate your application. The most important part of your application is your statement; the main thing to convey through your statement is your interest in the research. Though professors do look at your transcript and course load, if your interest in their project is evident, you will have a better chance. Most professors will follow up with an interview. During this time, you should explain why you are interested and even what you can contribute in furthering the project. Even if the Professor is not within the major you are pursuing, you can still apply as long as you express interest.
