What’s it like?
Being a transfer student can be both a very exciting and very trying experience. Students typically have to know exactly what they want from their education and have to fit in four or five semesters. However, given that a transfer student has this, they are able to focus on what they want at Cal and ignore the rest.
How to transfer?
In order to transfer to UC Berkeley, the student needs to complete the UC admissions application by November 30 for the following fall semester. Berkeley does not accept spring admits. The application is evaluated primarily on the completion of prerequisite courses, grades earned, personal statement and how long it will take the individual to complete the degree. Contrary to popular belief, there is no GPA cutoff. But, successful applicants usually have an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.

How to adjust to UC Berkeley
Transfer Students have the disadvantage of missing out on the Berkeley community for two years. The best way to adjust to this new environment is immerse oneself in the new environment. Take what you liked at your JC and try it here. Cal has so many student groups that focus on hobbies, sports, and special interests that you’re very likely to find what you’re looking for. Student groups are an excellent way to meet many new friends.
While there is not much room to play with classes, try taking an extra class. You have a couple weeks to drop it if you do not like it, or it is too much. But this is another great way to get the most out of your two years. Transfer students are not around for long, so they need to use their time wisely. Talk to professors, and your advisor to try and figure out the best schedule each semester. Classes are also another great place to make friends.
Other resources
Other transfer students can be your best resources. And almost 25% of UC Berkeley undergraduates are transfer students . Acting mostly as a support network, they can help you get through the speedy two years. Of course, the campus also offers some great resources:
