What is REU
Research Experiences for Undergraduates, REU, is a NSF sponsored summer research program. They are conducted at hundreds of universities and in all research fields. Through the REU program, you will work closely with a professor to conduct rewarding and worthwhile research. Additionally, at some programs, you will complete mini-courses in technical communication and ethics. Therefore, you will work 50 to 60 hours a week. REUs typically last 8 to 10 weeks and you will receive a stipend of $2500 to $4000. Most will cover travel and housing expenses. Finally, the program often includes fun activities such as picnics, movies, and ice cream socials.
Application
To find a program that you are interested, go to the website listed below. However, some programs are not listed on this website. Additional programs may be found by searching through Google.
The application consists of 2-3 letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a transcript. In order to give your letter writers enough time, ask professors or other writers well before winter break. The application is due late January to mid March.
Student Comment
“I strongly recommend the REU program. Working closely with a professor, you will conduct rewarding and meaningful research. Also, you will dramatically improve your chances of getting into graduate school because you will prove your research ability. Also, you will get a taste of life as a graduate student. Additionally, you will travel to a different part of the country. Finally, you will meet a lot of fascinating people.” - Robert Hennessy (EECS, Class of 2005)
