Haas Scholars
From Unofficial Guide to Engineering
What is the Haas Scholars Program
The Robert and Colleen Haas Scholars program provides twenty students a year the opportunity to conduct original summer research under the direction of a faculty member. The scholarship is open to students of all majors who are entering their final year at Cal, have a 3.5+ UCB GPA, and are financial aid eligible. The program provides monetary compensation totaling up to $12,600 in the form of a summer research budget as well as a personal stipend for the summer and academic year. Some of the non-monetary perks of being a Haas scholar include:
- The chance to become friends with 19 other really smart people that aren’t necessarily engineers.
- Meet the chairman of Levi Strauss & Co., Bob Haas.
- Free lunch on Fridays.
- Help with graduate school applications and fellowships.
The application for the Haas Scholarship, usually due in early March, involves writing a research proposal, drafting a budget, and obtaining a letter of support from the faculty member you want to work with. Don’t worry, there are workshops available to help you through the application process. Visit the Haas Scholars program website for more details.
