Faculty Advisor
From Unofficial Guide to Engineering
Upon entering the College of Engineering, you are assigned a faculty advisor in your major and usually in your specific option if applicable. These advisors are just professors who act as a liaison between the college and the students, and sometimes may or may not know course flow for the major. You are required to visit your advisor at least once a semester to get your 4-digit Advisor Code to register for classes on Tele-Bears. At this time, they will go over your transcript and course work to make sure you are headed down the right track.
If for some reason you do not like your Faculty Advisor, you can request to switch advisors. Sometimes the staff is welcome to requesting specific Faculty, but sometimes that Faculty may have too many students already and you may just be reassigned to one that is available.
Faculty Advisors are great resources especially when it comes to doing research; they may have connections or recommendations on which professors match your specific interests, if you ask them about it. Some professors understand course work better than others, but it is usually better to talk with upperclassmen about classes. Also, faculty advisors can provide advice on which graduate school that you should attend. Finally, they can proofread your personal statement and maybe write a letter of recommendation for you.!!
