From Unofficial Guide to Engineering

An externship (AKA shadowing) gives you a chance to shadow cal alumni for a couple of days during winter break. During the externship, you will observe the day to day activities of the alumni, discuss careers and maybe obtain hands-on experience. This is an excellent opportunity to determine if a major or specialty is right for you. Also, you will make valuable connections that may lead to an internship or a job. Finally, the externship is unpaid and you are responsible for arranging your own travel and lodgings.
