What is ESW?

Engineers for a Sustainable World is student chapter of a national nonprofit organization with a network of over 3000 professionals and students working to reduce poverty and improve global sustainability. Every day, people around the world struggle to gain access to clean water, food and shelter for their children, and an education to build a better future. ESW strives to create collaborations between students from all disciplines to engineer solutions to these global challenges.

Though this group, students who are interested in development and/or sustainability can learn and evaluate appropriate technologies in addition to forming groups to implement solutions to specific problems locally and globally.

Who can join?

The name is a slight misnomer, you don't have to be an engineer to join ESW. Students and professionals from all disciplines can join as solutions to such problems require a variety of skill sets and expertise.

Membership is $10 and is valid for 1 year from enrollment. Membership is required to participate in internships.

Activities

ESW host many events, in addition to forming research groups to address specific problems. Activities include:

  • Developing solar desalination units for Baja California
  • Introducing sustainable sanitation practices in Haiti
  • Internships in Guatemala and China
  • Interactive Workshops on Sustainability and Appropriate Technologies
  • Developing an Appropriate Technologies Design Class (first offered Spring 2006)
